OREM, Utah – CSUB got back to its winning ways as it defeated Utah Valley State, 81–74, on Saturday afternoon in NCAA Division I women's basketball action.
In her first start of the season, senior center Shawnee Carter (Studio City, Calif./Burroughs HS) got CSUB off to a good start as she knocked down the Roadrunners' first attempt of the game within the opening minute. The rest of the 'Runners would follow suit as they used a 9–0 run to gain a 10–point lead through the first five minutes.
CSUB (8–6) caught fire from behind the arc, including three from junior guard Kristine Herman (San Ramon, Calif./Florida Gulf Coast) to lead by 11 at one point. Senior guard Breana Fields (Sacramento, Calif./San Jose State) sunk two and freshman guard Cebrina Johnson (Corona, Calif./Santiago HS) added another to bring the total to seven made 'Runner three pointers in the first half.
Utah Valley State (1-9), behind 12 first half points from junior Jenna Johnson, fought back and managed to cut the deficit to two with a little over three minutes to play, by way of a 16–3 run of its own. CSUB sophomore guard Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS) scored five of her seven first half points in the remaining minutes to give the 'Runners a 41–37 lead at the break.
The Wolverines began the second half with six–unanswered points to tie the game for the first time just two minutes in and would eventually grab their first lead of the game at the 13–minute mark. The Roadrunners would respond, however, using a 7–2 to gain back the lead and would go on to lead by 10 with four minutes remaining.
Utah Valley once again rallied back to make the end of the game exciting, however, they were unable to cut CSUB's lead down to less than four and the Roadrunners held on for the win.
CSUB had four players finish in double–digit scoring as Herman led the way with 20, Williams finished with 17 and freshman guard Tyonna Outland (Compton, Calif./Lynwood HS) continued to put up high numbers with 11. The other 'Runner in double–digits was Johnson, who tallied a career–high 12 points. Both Johnson and senior center Tamiko Davis (Sacramento, Calif./San Jose State) led CSUB in rebounding, pulling down six a piece.
CSUB shot 52.4 percent (11–21) from behind the arc while also going 11–14 (78.6%) from the line.
The Roadrunners will look to add one more win on the road in 2010 as they travel to Bozeman, Mont. to face Montana State on Monday, Dec. 20 at 6:05 p.m. PST.
