Volleyball Drops Match at LMU in Five Sets

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Despite taking an early two-set lead, the CSUB Women's Volleyball team dropped a five-set contest to Loyola Marymount University at the Gerston Pavilion on Thursday night.

CSUB won the first two sets 25-21, 25-19, while the Lions of LMU took the last three 19-25, 20-25, and 7-15.

A balanced attack was the theme of the first set as six different 'Runners contributed kills to lead CSUB over LMU, 25-21. Junior setter Danielle Gong (Stockdale HS) led the way on defense collecting five digs and while juniors Lindy DeGeare (Stockdale HS) and Alysia Baker (Tri-City Christian HS/Vista, Calif.) added an early block.

CSUB carried the momentum into the second set jumping out to a quick three-point lead. LMU fought its way back to within a point near the middle of the set but the CSUB attack took over once again and cruised to a 25-19 win. After trailing just once through both sets, the 'Runners took a 2-0 lead into half time.

The third and fourth sets were almost identical as CSUB jumped out to an early four-point lead in both, however, LMU rallied to win each set, forcing the match to go to five.

LMU took control early in the fifth set and despite an effort from the 'Runners to come back, the Lions won the final set, 15-7, to secure the come-from-behind match victory. With the win, LMU improves to 15-10 on the year while CSUB remains winless.

Gong finished the match with a career-high 18 digs while DeGeare (14K, 12D) recorded her third double- double of the season and second in as many games.

CSUB returns home to the Icardo Center to host back-to-back matches against fellow NCAA Division I Independent Seattle University on Friday and Sunday. Both matches are set to begin at 6 p.m.
