Roadrunners Off to a 4?0 Start

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSUB women's basketball team defeated Santa Clara, 66–53, on Tuesday night in the Icardo Center, increasing its record to 4–0 on the season.

The Roadrunners got off to a slow start in the first half, as Santa Clara (0–4) led through majority of the first 10 minutes. After trailing by five points with just under 10 minutes to go, the 'Runners found their form and went on a 22–2 run to not only catch up, but take a commanding 12–point lead into halftime. Freshman guard Tyonna Outland (Compton, Calif./Lynwood HS) paced CSUB during the run, scoring nine of her career–high 11 points in a span of three minutes.

The second half featured the same story, as the Roadrunners got off to a slower–than–usual start, knocking down only four from the floor in the first 10 minutes. Santa Clara managed to cut the deficit to three with a little over nine minutes to play in the game however, senior guard Breana Fields (Sacramento, Calif./San Jose State) scored nine consecutive points to get the 'Runners back to a comfortable lead. CSUB secured its fourth win of the season by going on an 11–5 run to close out the game.

Fields led all Roadrunners in scoring, as she finished the night with 15 points. Senior forward Tamiko Davis (Sacramento, Calif./San Jose State) had a team–high 12 rebounds while also contributing six points.

It was a total team effort once again for the 'Runners, as thirteen different players saw time while 11 of them contributed at least one point or pulled down one rebound.

It is only the second time in program history CSUB has started 4–0 on the season, with the last time coming in the 2001–02 season. Head coach Tim La Kose is pleased with his team's efforts to keep improving its historic start.

“This has been a great way to start the season,” La Kose said. “This is the deepest team we have ever had at CSUB and we want to continue to take advantage of that. We have the ability to get a lot of different bodies in to the game while maintaining our style of basketball.”

CSUB's depth will be tested in the next 12 days, as the 'Runners travel to Eugene, Ore. to compete in the University of Oregon Invitational from Nov. 26–28. CSUB will face Sacramento State on Friday at 9:00 a.m., beginning a historic six-game road trip.
