FRESNO,
Calif. - A solid third set
wasn't enough to extend Tuesday's match with Fresno Pacific as the Sunbirds
earned a 25-14, 25-14, 26-24 victory over CSUB at the FPU Special Events
Center.
FPU
hit better than .400 in all three sets, more than offsetting one of CSUB's most
consistent attacking nights of the season. The Roadrunners hit .227 in the
first set, .281 in the third and finished at .181 for the match.
The
Sunbirds blew open a close first set, using a 10-1 run to turn a tight 12-10
affair into a cakewalk. The FPU run came earlier in set two, this time in the
form of an 11-3 streak that blew up an early 5-5 tie.
The
'Runners found their sea legs by the third set, however, and led for long
stretches of the set until the Sunbirds came back at the end. A pair of kills
by Lindy DeGeare (Stockdale HS) and two
aces by Alysia Baker (Vista/Tri-City
Christian HS) helped CSUB pull ahead 18-15. It wouldn't trail again until
Karah Mitchell's kill gave FPU its first match point at 24-23.
A
Haleigh Haratyk (Corona/Centennial HS)
kill briefly tied the set before the Sunbirds scored the final two points to
end it.
DeGeare
led CSUB with 10 kills and seven digs Tuesday night. Baker and Haratyk added
six kills apiece.
CSUB
closes the season this weekend when it travels to Seattle for the NCAA Division
I Independent Tournament.
