SAN FRANCISCO -– Frank Lomas, Joey Granata and Riley Orozco each swept through their respective brackets to claim top individual honors at the California Collegiate Open Saturday on the campus of San Francisco State. The CSUB wrestling team had nine total wrestlers place in the top four, including three champions, three second place finishers and three third place finishers.
“We had a good tournament overall and wrestled well, especially the guys who made it into the finals,” said Head Assistant Coach Mike Mendoza. “It was good for us to get one more tournament in before Pac-10's.”
At 125 pounds, Lomas went 4-0 with a pair of technical fall wins, one pin and one decision. He won the championship bout 15-0 over Menlo College's Jason Moorhouse. Also competing at 125 for CSUB was Tyler Iwamura, who finished third after going 5-1. The freshman's only loss was to runner-up Moorhouse.
At 165 pounds, Granata won four straight, including a 15-0 technical fall in his opening match and a 3-1 decision over Stanford's Kyle Meyer in the championship bout.
Orozco needed just three matches to claim the championship at 197 pounds, earning a 15-2 major decision over unattached Bryce Wilson, a 13-5 major decision over Oregon's Taylor Johnston and a 3-1 decision over San Francisco State's Vince Bordi.
Reaching the championship matches and placing second for the Roadrunners were Andrew Balch at 157 pounds, Troy Goodban at 174 pounds and Mike Larson at 184 pounds. Along with Iwamura, CSUB also got third place finishes from Tony Peitropaula at 133 pounds and David Morgan at heavyweight.
Another highlight for the Roadrunners was a third place finish by assistant coach Brian Cobb, competing unattached at 184 pounds. Cobb also earned the Dr. Haddad Award for most pins in fastest time. He had three pins in 14:34.
The Roadrunners return to action Feb. 10 for a non-conference dual at Cal Baptist, then travel to face Pac-10 foe Stanford on Feb. 12.
