No. 17 Water Polo Picks Up Conference Win; Falls In Invite Finale

RIVERSIDE, Calif.
– The No. 17 CSUB water polo team picked up a WWPA conference victory Friday against Cal State San Bernardino, 10-7, but fell to Cal Baptist, 8-5, Friday at the Cal Baptist Invitational. Sophomore Kaitlin Torres tallied five goals on the day as the Roadrunners moved to 2-2 on the season.

CSUB jumped to a 6-3 halftime advantage against the Coyotes in the first game. A rocky second half put the Roadrunner lead in jeopardy but a strong finish gave the 'Runners the victory. CSUB got hat-trick performances from freshman Sam Shead and sophomore Kaitlin Torres. Seniors Jessica Manke, Brittany Berry and Becky Seelos each tallied a goal. Freshman Jessica Browning continued her strong first season with a goal. Sophomore Megan Weatherbee had five blocks in goal and freshman Megan Pezzolla had six. Senior C.J. Longeuay, senior Alyson Moss and junior Tammy Barksdale each had two assists. Moss and sophomore Malia Pahoa each drew two ejections while Seelos and Shead each drew a five-meter.

In the second game, CSUB fell behind 4-3 at the half and were never able to recover as Cal Baptist added three goals in the fourth quarter to pull the upset. Torres added two goals while Browning, Seelos and Moss each added one. Megan Pezzolla had 11 blocks while playing all four quarters in goal.

"I thought we played well in the first game," said Head Coach Jason Gall. "It's always nice to get a conference win early in the year. Against Cal Baptist we learned that we need to minimize our mistakes or those will come back to hurt us. We did some good things today and since we are so young, we will continue to develop chemistry as our season progresses."

CSUB will head to Irvine to compete in the UC Irvine Mini on Saturday. A tough slate of games await the Roadrunners. No. 10 Arizona State (9 a.m.), No. 9 UC Irvine (12:30 p.m.) and No. 16 Long Beach State (4:30 p.m.) will provide a challenging test to the 'Runners.
