BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A hot shooting UC Davis women's basketball team ended CSUB's seven–game home winning streak Monday afternoon in the Icardo Center as the Aggies defeated the Roadrunners, 79–76. With the outcome still up in the air with just seconds remaining, UC Davis converted a fast break layup and iced it with a free throw with just one second remaining on the clock. A last second three–quarter court prayer came up short as CSUB fell for the first time in its last eight games at home.
The Roadrunners (10–9) set a new school record by connecting 16 times from beyond the arc. Big West leading UC Davis (12–6) shot 58.8 percent (30–of–51) from the floor, aided by a spectacular second half in which the Aggies hit 18 of its 26 shot attempts (69.2 percent).
Leading the Roadrunner charge was senior Kelley Tarver (Valencia HS) who tied a season–high with five three pointers. She also dished out eight assists and had two steals. Classmate Phynique Allen (San Diego, Calif./Eastern Washington) had her first double–double of the year with a 15 point, 10 assist performance. The 10 assists were a career high. Junior Tamiko Davis (Sacramento, Calif./San Jose State) grabbed a game–high 12 rebounds as the Roadrunners out rebounded the Aggies, 31–26. Senior Katie Williams (Las Vegas/Reedley College) added 14 points, hitting four of her nine three–point attempts. Freshman Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS) finished with 10 points.
The team's couldn't have been much closer in the first half, each building leads of four before having the game end up tied again. Amber Williams and Tarver each scored eight first–half points to lead for the 'Runners. Down by three with just six seconds remaining, Williams connected on one of her two three pointers of the half to send the teams into the locker room tied, 31–31.
UC Davis would open the second half by scoring 10 of the first 12 points to build an eight point advantage. But CSUB would come back, tying the contest, 64–64, with just under five minutes to play on a Tarver three pointer. The game would be tied at four different points in the game's final five minutes with CSUB hitting five field goals, all three pointers. Tied at 76–76 with just over a minute remaining, an Allen turnover led to a UCD layup. Katie Williams missed a go–ahead three pointer but secured the offensive board. But as she drove through the lane, she kicked the ball out to an open Allen but her momentum carried her into an Aggie defender and was whistled for a foul. CSUB would not get a shot off on its next posession as Allen committed another turnover and Williams was forced to foul. Hana Asano hit one of her two free throws and with just a second left, a three–quarter court heave would come up short.
Kassey Riecks had a game–high 21 points for UC Davis. Heidi Heintz (17), Haylee Donaghe (10) and Paige Mintun (10) all reached double figures.
CSUB will head to Stockton, Calif., to take on the Tigers from the University of the Pacific at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 20.
