'Runners Take Down No. 20 Loyola Marymount

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — A first half strike by junior defender Wayne Lampart put a break in Loyola Marymount's early attack, and the goal stood for the remainder of the match as the CSUB men's soccer team claimed a 1-0 win over the No. 20 ranked Lions Sunday.

The victory gave the Roadrunners (4-3-1) their first victory over a top-20 ranked opponent since the move to Division I in 2007. It also gave CSUB its first win over the Lions in four all-time tries and kept the side without a loss on the Main Soccer Field through three home matches. LMU, which had earned upsets over then No. 6 UC Santa Barbara and then No. 5 Dartmouth, in recent weeks, fell to 5-3-0 on the season.

The Lions came out of the gates with a vengeance, earning two corner kicks in the opening two minutes, the second resulting in a shot by leading scorer Rafael Baca that was saved by a diving Eric Shannon.

Just under three minutes later, Brock Smith had a shot saved by Shannon, but from there, the Roadrunner defense clamped down and slowed the LMU attack.

Lampart's goal at the 18:26 mark came as a result of quality ball possession through the midfield. CSUB began to build the ball up the right flank, but finding no room to press further up that side, Jesus Sanchez turned and sent the ball into the central midfield. Oscar Coppieters two-touched the ball along to a streaking Lampart, who dribbled up the left side near the top of the goalbox and blasted a shot out of the reach of goalkeeper Jack McCormack.

Bakersfield finished the half with nine shots to LMU's six, and closed out the match with a 12-10 shot advantage. Each goalkeeper made five saves apiece.

Baca entered the match with five goals, including two in the Lions' win over Dartmouth, but the Roadrunners slowed the crafty forward by slowing his pace and doubling in on him.

The Roadrunners continue their three-match homestand on Oct. 3, hosting Cal State Fullerton in a 7 p.m. start on the Main Soccer Field.
