SAN DIEGO ? Wednesday was tax day, and on the softball diamond it was the CSUB offense doing the collecting. The Roadrunner offense exploded for 17 runs to sweep future Pacific Coast Softball Conference foe the University of San Diego 5-2 and 12-3 at the USD Softball Complex.
Sophomore outfielder Stefani Frei led the offensive barrage, collecting three hits and five RBIs in the doubleheader. In fact, she had an RBI in each of CSUB's scoring innings Wednesday.
Freshman first baseman Justeen Maeva also hit safely in both games for CSUB, finishing the day with three hits and three runs scored.
CSUB (24-20 overall) jumped out quickly in both games. Frei's RBI double and a run-scoring single from Kristen Archuleta staked game one starter Brittany Johnson to a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the opener. Frei's two-run single capped a three-run third inning that put the Roadrunners in control, 5-0.
The 'Runners exploded for four runs in the opening frame of the nightcap, with another RBI single from Frei the catalyst. CSUB then enjoyed its biggest inning of the season, scoring eight times in the fourth inning to blow the game open. This time, Kelli Bailey's two-run single and a two-run double by Heather Veitch highlighted the scoring.
All that support was more than enough for junior Katie Chavez, who won for the sixth time in 2009. She allowed just three hits. USD (13-29) spoiled the shutout bid in the bottom of the fourth, with Taryn Keenan's home run marring an otherwise solid effort from Chavez.
CSUB continues its season-ending 10-game roadtrip Saturday when it begins a three-game set at UT-San Antonio.
