BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB softball team got a great team performance in the opener before suffering its first extra-innings loss of the season Monday afternoon as it opened a 15-game homestand with a split against Utah State at the Roadrunner Softball Complex. CSUB took the opener 12-0 in five innings before falling 6-3 in nine innings in the nightcap.
In game one, CSUB scored a season-high 12 runs, its second most ever against an NCAA Division I opponent. The Roadrunners also pounded out 14 hits, including a season-high seven extra-base hits in its first run-rule win of the season.
Freshman first baseman Justeen Maeva continued to swing the hot bat. She had three hits and three RBI in game one. Her two-run homer in the first inning provided all the run support CSUB would need.
But the Roadrunners got big performances up and down the lineup. Freshman shortstop Sammy Rodriguez added three hits and two RBI, including her second home run. Junior second baseman Kristen Archuleta continued to power her way out of an early season slump, chipping in three RBI while hitting her second home run as well.
All that offense was overkill with sophomore pitcher Brittany Johnson in control. Johnson allowed just two hits and faced just four batters over the minimum while evening her record at 5-5 on the season.
But game two saw Roadrunner fortunes turn as Utah State got a strong defensive effort to help pitcher Lindsey Benson dance around trouble and earn her first win of the season. CSUB stranded 11 runners, including six in scoring position.
The Aggies finally broke the game open in the ninth when a two-out double by Nicole Rupp drove home Emily Reilly from second base. Rayna Bradshaw followed with a two-run home run for a 6-3 Utah State lead.
A leadoff double in the bottom of the ninth by Kelli Bailey and a single by Jill McClelland brought the tying runs to the plate three times. But Benson starred down the heart of the 'Runner order to secure the win.
Bailey led the CSUB offense by going 4-for-6 with three doubles and four runs scored. Maeva finished 4-for-7 with a double, a home run and four RBI. Archuleta also went 4-for-7 with four RBI.
Bradshaw and Reilly were the only Aggies to hit safely in both games. Jeanine Hernandez added a pair of doubles in the second game.
CSUB continues its 15-game homestand Wednesday afternoon when it hosts Temple University in a doubleheader. First pitch is schedule for 1 p.m.
