SAN JOSE, Calif. ? The CSUB softball team opened its four-game series at San Jose State by splitting a pair of nail-biters with the Spartans Saturday at SJSU Field. CSUB rallied for four unanswered runs to win game one, 5-4, before San Jose State scored in the bottom of the seventh to take the nightcap, 1-0.
Trailing 4-1, CSUB (8-9 overall) climbed to within one run on Kristen Archuleta's two-run home run in the sixth inning. Junior catcher Jaimey Kleinsmith tied the game with her second home run of the season one out into the seventh inning before Sammy Rodriguez scored from third on a two-out error to complete the comeback.
The second game proved to be a pitcher's duel in which junior righty Katie Chavez just missed in her bid for her second shutout of the season. But a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh proved costly when Kayla Hayes followed with a double to the gap in left center to bring home the game's only run.
In addition to Archuleta and Kleinsmith, Kelli Bailey went 3-for-5 to lead the Roadrunner offense in the first game. After being held hitless in her last game, Justeen Maeva bounced back to hit safely in both games Saturday. Maeva now has a hit in 16 of her first 17 collegiate games.
The Roadrunners and Spartans will conclude their four-game set with a doubleheader Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
CSUB returns home Monday to open a 15-game homestand, starting with a doubleheader against Utah State at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
