No. 19 'Runners Upset Tritons; Control Panthers in Pair of WWPA Matches


BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The No. 19 CSUB water polo team swept a pair of WWPA matches Saturday at the Roadrunner Invitational II at the Hillman Aquatics Center. The Roadrunners opened the day by doubling up No. 16 UC San Diego, 12-6, and then disposed of Chapman, 14-8, in the afternoon. CSUB is now 16-11 on the season and 7-2 in WWPA action.

Prior to the game against Chapman, the Roadrunners honored seniors Petra Koudelkova, Amanda Ortiz, Veronica Campbell and Katherine Gillett as they played in their final home game.

CSUB jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against No. 16 UC San Diego in the morning session. But slowly the 'Runners watched their advantage shrink until the game was tied, 4-4, by the halftime break. In the second, CSUB opened by scoring the first two goals on strikes by Alyson Moss and Koudelkova. Shannon McKenzie and Becky Seelos would add two more in the third quarter to bring the lead back out to 8-5. In the fourth, McKenzie and classmate Kaitlin Torres would score while Ortiz added her second of the game. Torres would make the lead six as she scored with 1:56 remaining, 12-6. Veronica Cambell had nine saves in goal for the 'Runners.

Against Chapman in the second game, CSUB opened by scoring the first six goals of the game. The Panthers closed the gap to within three with a strike late in the third quarter, 9-6. But the Roadrunners would score five of the game's final seven goals to cruise to a 14-8 victory. Gillett and Ortiz each recorded hat tricks in the game while McKenzie and Torres had two a piece. Campbell had six blocks in goal.

The Roadrunners head to the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on April 4-5. There they will have a rematch against Loyola Marymount on Saturday followed by Colorado State. On Sunday, San Jose State and Sonoma State will take on CSUB.
