MORAGA, Calif. ? The offense continued its search to regain its early season form as future Pacific Coast Softball Conference rival Saint Mary's College swept CSUB 4-3 and 5-1 Saturday afternoon in Moraga.
CSUB seemed poised to take a marathon first game in which Danielle Lyman's RBI single gave the Roadrunners a 3-2 lead in the top of the 12th inning. But Saint Mary's came back to end the longest game in CSUB's NCAA Division I history by scoring twice in the bottom of the inning for the win.
In game two, Katherine Delpit's fourth home run of the season staked the Gaels to a 2-0 lead in the third inning and a pair of Saint Mary's pitchers made it hold up for the sweep.
CSUB took a 2-1 lead in the first game thanks to freshman Justeen Maeva's fourth homer, a two-run shot in the fourth inning. Saint Mary's came back to tie the game in the fifth before Brittany Johnson and the Gael pitchers each threw more than six shutout innings until the fateful 12th inning.
Sophomore Stefanie Frei led the CSUB offense with two hits in each game. She finished the day 4-for-8. Lyman, who played in game one only, went 3-for-6.
CSUB (17-17 overall) and Saint Mary's (15-15) will conclude their three-game series with a single game Sunday at noon. The Roadrunners return home to host Loyola Marymount University for a Tuesday doubleheader.
