Bats Silent In Loss To Santa Barbara

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB softball team let UC Santa Barbara starter Lindsey Correa off the ropes early, and the Gaucho junior settled down to complete a two-hitter in a 6-0 UCSB win Sunday at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.

CSUB (7-8 overall) didn't get its first hit until the sixth inning, when Jaimey Kleinsmith and Danille Lyman led off with consecutive singles to left.

But CSUB had chances early. The Roadrunner offense stranded five through the first four innings, as Correa struggled to find the strike zone and a pair of Gaucho errors created opportunities for CSUB.

The best Roadrunner chance came in the third inning, when two errors and a walk loaded bases for Danielle Lyman, who began the at bat hitting a team-leading .513. Lyman hit a fly to deep left, but it was high enough to give Brooke Putich plenty of time to track the ball down and end the threat.

UCSB (11-7) scored the only runs it would need in its half of the third. Jessica Beristianos tripled to right center to score Tiffany Wright from first base. Amanda Ziegler followed with a sharp single to left and the Gauchos were in control.

The big news of the day for CSUB came when freshman Justeen Maeva was held hitless for the first time in her collegiate career. It ended a 14-game hitting streak to start the season.

She finished 0-for-2 after second baseman Christine Ramos made a nice play to track down her foul pop in short right in the first inning and Correa struck her out swinging in the sixth. Maeva walked on four pitches as part of CSUB's third-inning rally.

CSUB will hit the road for four games this weekend at San Jose State, with doubleheaders Friday and Saturday. The Roadrunners return home to host Utah State in a doubleheader March 9.
