Maeva's Heroics Help Softball Split With UCSB

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? Freshman Justeen Maeva continued the torrid start to her collegiate career with a pair of big hits to help the CSUB softball team earn a come-from-behind 7-6 victory in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader with UC Santa Barbara at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.

UCSB (10-7 overall) held off another Roadrunner comeback to hold on for a 4-3 win in the opener.

CSUB (7-7) trailed 6-0 after 3 ? innings when the comeback began. The Roadrunners scratched out one run in the fourth and two more in the sixth, but it was Maeva's three-run bomb in the bottom of the seventh inning that tied the game at 6-6.

Playing with Jill McClelland on second base via the international tiebreaker rule in the ninth, Maeva ended the affair with a double to the fence in left center.

Maeva has now hit safely in all 14 games of her collegiate career. She finished Saturday's doubleheader 4-for-8 with five RBI, two doubles and her second home run of the season.

Maeva's heroics helped reward a strong pitching effort from junior Shawna Truan, who surrendered just three hits in five scoreless innings of relief for her second win of the season.

CSUB nearly completed a similar comeback in the opener. Trailing 4-0 after 2 ? innings, Maeva's two-out, RBI double capped a three-run third that pulled the Roadrunners to within 4-3.

But Gaucho relievers Jenny Liepman and Tami Weston frustrated CSUB down the stretch. The Roadrunners left five runners in scoring position over the final four innings, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh with .548 hitting Danielle Lyman at the plate. Lyman took a called third strike from Weston to end the game.

In addition to Maeva, McCLelland had a big day at the plate, going 5-for-9 with five runs scored Saturday. Lyman and Kelli Bailey also hit safely in both games for CSUB.

Doubles by Christine Ramos and Amanda Ziegler helped UCSB open its big lead to start the first game. Home runs by Ziegler and Tiffany Wright did the damage early in game two.

CSUB will conclude its three-game series with UCSB Sunday at the Roadrunner Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for Noon.
