BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB softball team took the season series from future Pacific Coast Softball Conference foe Santa Clara University with a doubleheader split Sunday. The Roadrunners won game one 8-2 before Santa Clara came back to win the nightcap 8-5 at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
CSUB took the first game of the series, 7-5, Saturday afternoon.
CSUB (6-6 overall) got a solid effort in the circle from sophomore Brittany Johnson in the opener. Johnson allowed just four hits and one walk while picking up her second win of the season.
In the second game, junior Katie Chavez danced around trouble for three innings until some shaky defense opened the door to a four-run Santa Clara fourth inning. The Roadrunners played catch up twice, but the Broncos finally got Chavez's number in the seventh, scoring three times to secure the win.
Offensively, Kelli Bailey and Jill McClelland each posted four hits for CSUB. Bailey had two doubles, scored twice and drove in two runs in the opener. McLelland had two hits and finished the day with three runs and two RBI.
CSUB also got a four-RBI performance from junior Danielle Lyman, who hit her third home run of the season, a three-run shot, in game two.
Lyman and Bailey increased their hitting streaks to nine and eight games respectively. Freshman Justeen Maeva also continued the torrid start to her career. She had one hit in each game, including a two-run double in the opener, and has now hit safely in all 12 games of her collegiate career.
The day started out great for CSUB. Maeva's two-out double capped a four-run third inning that put CSUB in control. The Roadrunners put the game away with two-out, running scoring singles from Jaimey Kleinsmith and Lyman in the fifth.
Both teams squandered opportunities in game two. Trailing 1-0, Santa Clara seemed to take control in the fourth. The Broncos caught a break when Bailey made a risky choice to throw behind the runner unsuccessfully at second base with no outs. With the door open, Santa Clara parlayed two hits, two errors, two walks and an illegal pitch into four runs.
Lyman righted the ship for CSUB with her three-run shot in the bottom of the fifth, tying the game at 4-4. But in the sixth, Chavez left a two-out, 0-2 pitch over the plate and rightfielder Briana Knight made her pay with a no-doubt homer to center.
The Roadrunners had one more comeback left. They loaded the bases with nobody out on a single, and interference call and a walk to start the sixth inning. McClelland singled home one run to tie the game at 5-5. But CSUB's three; four and five hitters couldn't get another run across against relief pitcher Lauren Passafuime.
That proved a fatal blow to the Roadrunners when Megan Smith led off the Bronco seventh with a triple to right center. Kristen Welsh followed with an infield single to shortstop and Smith scored what proved to be the game winner on the play.
CSUB returns to action Saturday when it hosts UC Santa Barbara in a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
