BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB softball team earned a split in its home openers Saturday afternoon, falling to the University of the Pacific 3-1 before bouncing back to upend future Pacific Coast Softball Conference foe Santa Clara 7-5 at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
Justeen Maeva and Jaimey Kleinsmith led the CSUB (5-5 overall) offense with four hits apiece Saturday. Maeva went 2-for-3 in both games, including an RBI single vs. Pacific (5-4) and an RBI double against Santa Clara (0-3) Kleinsmith collected three of her hits against Santa Clara, including her second home run and four RBIs.
Sophomore Brittany Johnson threw well in the opener vs. Pacific. She scattered seven hits with no walks and retired 10 of the final 11 Tiger batters. But Nicole Matson's two-run homer in the first inning proved too much for the Roadrunners to overcome.
In the nightcap, junior Katie Chavez allowed 14 Santa Clara hits, but did a masterful job pitching out of trouble as the Broncos stranded 14 base runners.
CSUB will close its three-game series against Santa Clara with a doubleheader Sunday at the Roadrunner Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
