LOS ANGELES ? The CSUB softball team reversed roles Saturday but the net result was the same. After scoring five times in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat fellow NCAA Division I Independent Seattle University 8-7 Friday, the Roadrunners held off a furious Seattle rally to win 10-9 Saturday at the LMU Invitational on Smith Field.
Junior designated player Danielle Lyman homered for the second consecutive game to highlight the 14-hit CSUB attack. Freshman shortstop Sammy Rodriguez added a three-run homer, her first in a collegiate uniform.
CSUB (2-4 overall) appeared ready to win this one in a laugher. The Roadrunners raced to leads of 4-0 and 8-2 before Seattle rallied to give CSUB a late scare.
Lyman led off the second inning with her shot. The Roadrunners scratched out three more runs before Rodriguez's blast in the fourth seemingly put CSUB in control, 7-2.
But after a Kelli Bailey two-out, RBI single made it 8-2 in the top of the fifth, the Redhawks exploded for four runs in the bottom of the inning. Seattle loaded the bases with no outs and then used an infield single and a pair of walks to highlight a four-run outburst.
CSUB escaped further damage when relief pitcher Shawna Truan coaxed a 1-2-3 double play grounder from Jodie Schemehr before fanning Lisa Hill.
RBI singles by Chelsey Bell and Justeen Maeva in the top of the seventh added what proved to be critical insurance runs. A leadoff home run by pinch hitter Katie Zander and a two-out, two-run single by Hill got Seattle to within 10-9. But Truan fanned Lauren Berin with Hill on second to end the game.
Five Roadrunners posted multi-hit games Saturday, led by Maeva, who went 3-for-5 with her first collegiate double. Bailey, Bell, Lyman and Jaimey Kleinsmith added two hits each.
CSUB will close play at the LMU Invitational Sunday (weather permitting) when it plays the University of Illinois-Chicago at 10 a.m. and concludes its suspended game with host Loyola Marymount at 3 p.m. The Roadrunners led LMU 2-0 after two innings when rain halted play Friday.
