SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - A hot shooting Cal Poly team was too much for the CSUB women's basketball team Sunday evening in the final day of the Courtyard by Marriott Holiday Beach Classic at Mott Gym in San Luis Obispo, Calif. The Mustangs shot 58.6 percent (34-for-58) from the field to beat the Roadrunners, 89–80.
The win moves Cal Poly to 3–2 on the season while CSUB drops to 2–4. The two teams were tied at the break, 37–37, but a 10–0 Cal Poly run to begin the second half gave the Mustangs an advantage they would not relinquish.
Kristina Santiago, the Mustangs' standout forward, scored a game–high 28 points, 15 coming in the second half. Teammate Rachel Clancy added 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.
Senior Katie Williams (Las Vegas, Nev./Reedley College) led the team in scoring (19), rebounds (8), assists (6) and steals (4). It marked the 23rd consecutive contest that Williams has reached double-digit point totals, dating back to last season. She was named
All–Tournament after scoring 27 points on Saturday. Another hot shooting night from senior Tiffany Belt (Bakersfield, Calif./West HS) as she tied her career–high with six three-pointers, totalling 18 points. Junior Tamiko Davis (Sacramento, Calif./San Jose State) had 12 points and seven rebounds before fouling out.
The lone Roadrunner lead came right at the beginning of the game as senior Kelley Tarver (Valencia HS) hit a three–pointer on the opening possession. There were 10 different occurrences where the game was tied in the first half.
In the second half, Cal Poly opened the game up with a 10–0 run to begin the period. The lead would be extended to as many as 13 late in the half. With 5:16 remaining, senior guard Phynique Allen (San Diego, Calif./Eastern Washington) fouled out, picking up two calls in just over 40 seconds. But CSUB would respond with a 7–0 run to pull within five, 72–67, with 3:52 to go. Down the stretch, however, Cal Poly would hit five of its six free-throw attempts to seal the win.
The Roadrunners outrebounded Cal Poly, 43–41, and forced 21 Mustang turnovers while committing just 16. The two teams will meet again on Jan. 30, at the Icardo Center.
CSUB will have over a week off before its next game, a Wednesday, Dec. 9, contest against Utah Valley at 7 p.m. in the Icardo Center. That contest kicks off the Roadrunners' busiest two weeks of the year as they will take to the court seven times in 14 days.
