ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Fresh off a five-set thriller in Wednesday's
win over Cal State Northridge, the CSUB volleyball team kept rolling Friday
with a 25-20, 25-13, 25-13 win at South Carolina State in Orangeburg.
CSUB
(9-10 overall) hit a season-best .362 in the match, including marks of .415 in
set two and .421 in set three. Junior outside hitter Lindsay Toone (Liberty
HS) led the way with career
highs of 14 kills and a .433 attack percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Lindy DeGeare (Stockdale HS)
enjoyed an efficient day with 12 kills against no errors for a career-best .522
attack percentage.
In
fact the entire Roadrunner team attacked a record-setting pace. No Roadrunner
made more than two errors as the team set an NCAA Division I era school-record
for fewest attack errors with seven.
"I
was a little worried early because we started a little shaky," said CSUB Head
Coach John Price. "But we played very well after the first set. Now, we'll look
to build on that with another strong match tomorrow."
CSUB
made five of its seven errors in the first set. The Roadrunners never trailed,
but they also never led by more than six as SCSU kept things interesting early.
The
'Runner offense kicked into gear in the second set. Trailing 5-3, Barbie Unfried (Bakersfield HS)
served eight points in a 10-1 run that put them in control. CSUB pulled away
early in the third set, ending the match fittingly with Toone's 14th
kill.
CSUB
was so solid in the second set that it scored 18 of its 25 points via kills, a
school record under the 25-point scoring system. The 'Runners made just one
error in both the second and third sets.
Elizabeth
Webb led SCSU (6-11) with eight kills.
The
'Runners and Bulldogs will conclude their two-match series Saturday in
Orangeburg. First serve will be at 9 a.m. PDT.
