RIVERSIDE, Calif.
- The No. 18 ranked CSUB water polo team opened its 2009 season with a pair of
wins at the Cal Baptist Invitational in Riverside,
Calif., on Saturday. The ?Runners opened
the day with a 13-9 victory over preseason No. 17 UC Santa Barbara. In the
second game, CSUB defeated Azusa Pacific, 21-4.
Katherine Gillett scored at the 5:04 mark of the first quarter and CSUB never looked back,
jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead. UC Santa Barbara would inch back as the
Gauchos scored the first two goals of the second quarter to close the gap to
5-3. But that would be as close as the ?Runners would let their opponents get.
Veronica Campbell played the entire game and made 10 blocks while dishing off
two assists. Petra Koudelkova led the ?Runner offense with three goals while
Amanda Ortiz added three. Fresno Pacific transfer Alyson Moss had two goals.
“This was a good win for us,” Head Coach Jason Gall said.
“It was nice for us to beat a higher ranked opponent. I was happy with the
amount of chemistry our team showed with it being so early in the season. I
think our new players really contributed and we will use this to move forward.”
In the second game, CSUB again jumped out early with a 3-0
lead. Azusa Pacific, playing in just its second game of water polo in program
history, was unable to contain the ?Runners as CSUB extended the lead to 11-2
at the half. The Roadrunners would score 10 of the game's final 12 goals to win
going away, 21-4. Kaitlin Torres scored in every quarter for the ?Runners to
lead the team offensively. Kerinn Fields added three goals. In goal, Campbell
had four blocks before giving way to Megan Wetherbee. Wetherbee finished with
six blocks in her first collegiate contest.
“It was nice for our freshman to get some playing time in
the second game,” Gall said. “Torres had an exceptional game for us and Kellie
Goodwin played very well today.”
CSUB will return to Riverside
for a pair of games on Jan. 31. The ?Runners will face No. 8 Arizona State at 11:30 a.m. followed by Cal
Baptist University
at 5 p.m.
