BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? As the inaugural CSUB baseball team arrived on campus to begin classes Monday, Head Coach Bill Kernen announced the addition of Dennis Machado as an assistant coach and Bill Gentry as a volunteer assistant coach, solidifying the Roadrunner coaching staff for the upcoming season.
“Bill Gentry and Dennis Machado add to the depth and breadth of our coaching staff's abilities and experience,” said Kernen. “Bill will participate in many coaching and operational aspects of the program by working closely with Coach Jody Robinson on both offense and defense. Dennis will work closely with me in the areas of pitching, catching and he will be involved in recruiting as well.”
Machado spent the past two seasons as the pitching coach at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, where, in 2008, his pitching staff included three All-Western State Conference selections, one All-Southern California team selection and one second team California Community College All-American.
In the summers of 2007 and 2008, Machado was the pitching coach for the Kenai Peninsula Oilers of the Alaska League. This past summer his staff set a team and league record with a combined ERA of 2.11, helping the Oilers to a 30-17 record.
Machado began his career as a pitching coach for the Kenai American Legion in Alaska from 1994-97. He then moved on to the assistant head coach/pitching coach position at East Anchorage High School from 2001-05. During those four years, Machado's teams went 157-29, including a pair of state championships. After four years at the prep level, Machado moved on to be named an assistant coach at Porterville College for the 2006 season.
Machado was drafted by the Montreal Expos out of high school, but went on to pitch at Butler County Community College and Oral Roberts University. He also play four years with the Peninsula Oilers and was a member of the 1994 National Baseball Congress World Series Championship team. Machado earned his bachelor's degree in health and human development from Montana State-Bozeman in 2000.
Gentry has been a fixture in the local baseball community, and the entire West Coast, for years, most recently serving as the Director of Field Operations for the Bakersfield Blaze, the California League affiliate of the Texas Rangers, in 2008. He also served as the head coach at Bakersfield Christian High School from 2004-08 and was a CIF Central Section Coach of the Year. Gentry has also coached at Taft College, Liberty High School in Bakersfield and Buena High School in Ventura.
In the professional ranks, Gentry has spent the past eight years as scout in Central and Southern California for the 2006 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals. Since 2002, he has also served as the head coach of the Southern California St. Louis Cardinals Scout Team.
A life member of both the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association and the Minor League Baseball Alumni Association, Gentry is also a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association, the National High School Baseball Coaches Association, the National Pitching Association and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Gentry is the owner of the Pro Player Academy of Baseball and sits on the advisory board for Coast to Coast Baseball. He has coached in the Coast to Coast International Baseball Program in Puerto Rico and Florida, and has worked the Coastal Pro Sports and Future of America Baseball camps.
Gentry, who earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from Concordia College in the Virgin Islands, is retired from a successful 25-year law enforcement career. Gentry has four adult children and resides in Bakersfield with his wife Lynn.
