BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB and University of San Diego softball teams all but short-circuited the scoreboard at the Roadrunner Softball Complex Saturday, combining for 33 runs and 58 hits in a doubleheader split. CSUB took game one 13?8 before the Toreros came back to win game two 10?1 in five innings.
Senior third baseman Cara Klein ran her personal best hitting streak to 11 games by hitting safely in both games. She finished the day 5-for-8, including four hits, two doubles and three RBI in game one.
Sophomore first baseman Danielle Lyman also had four hits for the Roadrunners ? two in each game ? while junior leftfielder Nette Puente collected three of CSUB's 20 hits in game one.
Kristen Gensler and Kathleen Bonja had four hits apiece ? two in each game ? for USD while Jennifer Ellenbeck collected all four of her hits in a 4-for-4 game one performance.
Game one looked like it was going to be a laugher for the Roadrunners when they scored five runs while batting around in the first inning. But USD got a run back in the second on Bonja's solo home run before taking the lead with a five?run third inning capped by an Ellebeck three?run shot.
CSUB retook the lead in its half of the third thanks to RBI singles from Heather Veitch, Puente and Brooklyn Stuart. Freshman pitcher Brittany Johnson came out of the bullpen to quiet the USD bats while the 'Runner offense supported her with five more runs in their final three at bats to put the game away.
The fireworks continued into game two as USD scored twice in the top of the first. But 'Runner fans saw a bad omen when they loaded the bases but couldn't score in their half of the first.
Three consecutive singles helped Bakersfield get a run back in the third inning, but the 'Runners left the bases loaded again, and the Toreros made them pay in the fourth. USD pounded out eight hits and eight runs in an inning highlighted by a two?run homer from Bonja and two?run doubles from Lindsey Fleet and Celine Pujol.
Johnson came on in relief to put out the fire, but the damage had been done.
Bakersfield had a chance to extend the game in the fourth inning, but centerfielder Nichole Valenzuela robbed CSUB of at least two runs with a spectacular running catch of Pikake Nutter?Gaudet's bid for extra bases at the warning track in right center with two on and one out. Jessi Waers, on in relief on Gensler, then retired the final five 'Runners to end the game.
CSUB (13?17 overall) heads south Sunday to face 2007 NCAA Regional finalist Loyola Marymount in a doubleheader. USD (13?22) opens Pacific Coast Softball Conference action at Portland State April 5.
