SAN DIEGO ? For the second consecutive day, the upstart CSUB softball team narrowly missed in its quest for a signature win in its first NCAA Division I campaign, falling to Pac-10 power Oregon 7-6 to close day two of the San Diego Classic.

CSUB (6-9 overall), opened play Saturday by falling to James Madison, 6-2.

But the story Saturday was the near comeback win against Oregon (12-8). The Roadrunners fell behind the Ducks big early, trailing 4-0 and 6-2 before rallying. A Duck error helped Bakersfield get one run back in the fourth inning, but Joanna Gail hit her second home run of the game to get the run back for Oregon.

In their half of the fifth, the Roadrunners made things interesting. After Nette Puente led off with a single, Kelli Bailey and Brooklyn Stuart hit back-to-back doubles to get CSUB to within 7-5. A Cara Klein ground out got Bakersfield to within 7-6. Despite getting base runners in each of the last two innings, however, the ?Runners could find the tying run.

In Saturday's opener, Bakersfield scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to jump ahead of James Madison (7-3). But JMU scored four times in the third inning to break the game open while CSUB managed just three hits over the final six frames.

Stuart had a big day at the plate, driving in a pair of runs in each game. Senior outfielder Pikake Nutter-Gaudet also broke out of her early-season slump with three hits in the Oregon game.

The ?Runners will close out play at the San Diego Classic Sunday afternoon with games against Harvard and the University of San Diego.
