LAS VEGAS, Nev. ? The CSUB softball team ran its winning streak to four with a 10-2 win over Northwestern State before falling 4-0 to UTEP to conclude day one of action at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic Friday afternoon in Las Vegas.
Bakersfield (4-2 overall) ran its win streak to four games with its first run-rule victory as an NCAA Division I program against Northwestern State (0-5). But the Roadrunner defense went south in their second game to spoil an otherwise solid outing by sophomore pitcher Katie Chavez. CSUB committed five errors as UTEP (5-2) snapped the four-game Roadrunner win streak.
The 'Runners pounded out 17 hits in their opening win over Northwestern State. Sophomores Nette Puente and Kristen Archuleta and freshman designated player Brooklyn Stuart led the attack with three hits apiece. It was the first career three-hit game for all three players.
After allowing a pair of first-inning runs, freshman pitcher Brittany Johnson settled down to shutout the Demons over the final four frames. Her offense, meanwhile, kicked into gear almost immediately. The 'Runners scored in all five innings, putting three spots on the board in the third and fourth innings before ending the game via the eight-run rule with two more in the fifth.
The 'Runner offense finally hit a road block against UTEP. The Miners scratched out a run in the first inning, and that proved all the support Renee DiPuccio would need. DiPuccio no-hit CSUB through four innings and allowed just three hits in the game.
Stuart finished the day 4-for-6 with three RBI while Puente added four hits for CSUB.
The 'Runners continue play at the Louisville Slugger Classic Saturday with games against former NCAA Division II rival Portland State and No. 23 UNLV. CSUB concludes tournament play Sunday against Bradley University and the Canadian National team.
