The last time the CSUB volleyball team played in the Shurian Activity Center, host Utah Valley University was sweep the Roadrunner in the 2007 NCAA Division I Independent Championship match. Friday night, the 'Runners extracted a measure of revenge, shrugging off a slow start with a furious finish to hand the Wolverines their first home loss of the season, 25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 25-12.
CSUB (10-8 overall) held off Utah Valley (3-8) in a close first set before the Wolverines overcame a late 'Runner lead to pull out an equally tight second set. But the 'Runners used a 9-2 run early in the third set and a 7-0 run early in the fourth to take control and cruise to the wins.
Senior middle blocker Rosemary Stribling (West HS) was dominant for CSUB, collecting a match-high 16 kills against just one hitting error for a .577 attack percentage. Alysia Baker (Vista/Tri-City Christian HS) added nine kills, four aces and four blocks while Sarah Norman (Stockdale HS) chipped in eight kills and five blocks for the 'Runners.
Barbie Thistle's (Bakersfield HS) 42 assists triggered the offense while Mystie McNaughton (Stockdale HS) continued to inch closer to the CSUB career digs record with a match?high 15.
CSUB will conclude its three-match swing through Utah with a Saturday matinee at Utah Valley. The 'Runners return home to host Bucknell University Oct. 13.
