STANFORD, Calif. ? The CSUB wrestling team could not come up with its sixth consecutive win Thursday, falling 22-16 to Pac-10 rival Stanford at the Ford Center.
With action beginning at the 141 division, Elijah Nacita gave the Roadrunners (6-2 overall, 5-2 Pac-10) a quick 6-0 lead with a pin of Max Rosefigura just 2:09 into the bout.
The Cardinal (8-2 overall, 2-1 Pac-10) won the next two matches by decision to tie the team scoring at 6-6. At 149, Lucas Espericueta beat Jeremy Doyle in a tight 4-2 decision and No. 10 nationally ranked Josh Zupancic broke away for a 10-5 win over Trevor Hall at 157.
“(That 157 match) was a returning All-American against a true freshman,” said CSUB Assistant Head Coach Mike Mendoza. “Trevor wrestled really hard and kept it close until the final period.”
Daniel Atondo got the lead back for CSUB with a 15-5 major decision over Peter Miller, but three consecutive Stanford wins at 174, 184 and 197 gave the Cardinal back the lead for good.
A Ryan Bergman 6-4 decision over Phillip Doerner in the heavyweight division brought CSUB back to within three, but No. 6 nationally ranked Tanner Gardner put the meet away with a pin of Zack Bigboy in the 125 bout.
Thomas Kimbrell closed out the night with a 7-4 decision over Porfirio Madrigal, giving the ?Runners four wins in 10 bouts.
“We had some guys get after it and again take advantage of being better conditioned,” said Mendoza. “But we also had some missed opportunities in certain matches.”
The ?Runners continue on the road Friday with a non-conference dual at San Francisco State at 1 p.m. and the annual California Collegiates Saturday, also on the Gators' campus.
