SALEM, Ore. - CSUB Head Coach T.J.
Kerr earned career wins No. 398 and 399 as the Roadrunners claimed
21-19 victories over Pac-10 rivals Oregon and Oregon State Friday.
The 'Runners moved to 4-1 overall and
3-1 in Pac-10 dual action with the double victory.
Featuring one tie and six lead changes
in the team scoring, CSUB's matin?e dual was a battle from
start to finish. The Ducks took an early 3-0 lead when Charlie
Alexander earned a 6-2 decision over Ryan Bergman in the heavyweight
division.
Brandon Zoetewey tied the score 3-3
with a 6-0 decision over Joey Lucas at 125. Oregon's Ryan Dunn
outlasted John Cardenas, 19-8 in the 133 division, but a forfeit win
for Elijah Nacita at 141 and a Jeremy Doyle 9-3 win at 149 gave the
'Runners a 19-7 advantage.
The Ducks took victories at 157, 174
and 197, but at 165, CSUB's Daniel Atondo used a 7-1 advantage
through the first two periods to hold on for an 11-4 win and Riley
Orozco gave the 'Runners six more points with a forfeit win at 184 to
hold on for the 21-19 victory.
After making the short drive from
Eugene to Salem, the 'Runners pulled off another three-point win,
this time over the defending Pac-10 champions Oregon State.
The Beavers took a 6-0 lead with a
forfeit victory at 285, but three straight CSUB wins gave the
'Runners a 15-6 advantage through four divisions. Zoetewey broke a
6-6 tie by earning the one-point riding time advantage for a 7-6 win
at 125. In the 133 and 141 divisions, Thomas Kimbrell and Nacita
pinned their opponents for six-point victories and Atondo's 11-8 win
over Keegan Davis stretched a narrow three-point CSUB lead back to
five.
Things got interesting in the final
three bouts as OSU's Chris Pratt and Kyle Bressler used decision
victories to give the Beavers a 19-18 lead, leaving the final team
score up for grabs in the final match.
After holding a narrow 4-3 lead early
in the second period, CSUB's Ancona collected points off a pair of
third-period takedowns over Brice Arand. Combined with the extra
point for riding time advantage, Ancona claimed the 11-6 decision
and gave the 'Runners the victory.
“We had a few guys wrestler really
well and got some good wins for some of our guys,” said Assistant
Head Coach Mike Mendoza. “Atondo did well in both his matches and
Elijah pinned a pretty good guy from Oregon State.”
The 'Runners will seek a fourth
consecutive win Saturday at Portland State while Kerr will be chasing
after his 400th career victory when action gets underway
at 7 p.m. at the Stott Center.
