WOLVERINE NOTES (6-13 overall): The Wolverines have been one of the nation's top independent teams and posted a 22?7 record last season...Jr. swingman Ryan Toolson, a 2007 1st team All?Indepen-dent selection, ranks No. 2 among independent scorers this season at 22.4 ppg... CSUB would be wise not to foul Toolson, who is shooting an amazing 96 pct. (86-of-90) from the line...Sr. F Jordan Brady adds 10.7 ppg.
SERIES HISTORY: This will be the first?ever meeting between CSUB and Utah Valley in men's basketball...The teams will meet again
Mar. 1 in Utah...The only other times CSUB UVU have met in any sport were in women's volleyball earlier this season.
THIS DATE IN ROADRUNNER HISTORY: It took the Roadrunners 18 seasons to pick up their first Jan. 19 victory. The breakthrough came with an 86?59 win over Cal State Northridge in 1989.
THEY'RE INDEPENDENT TOGETHER: When the Roadrunners meet the Wolverines of Utah Valley University, it will mark CSUB's first?ever meeting with a fellow NCAA Division I independent institution. In addition to their home?and?home series versus Utah Valley, the 'Runners also will play a home?and?home series with independent UT?Pan American (Feb. 12 & 22) this season.
ROLLING, ROLLING, ROLLING: Frankie Layne may have been writing about herding cattle when he wrote those lyrics to Rawhide, but he might just as well have been writing about the 'Runners as of late. CSUB will be looking to win its fourth consecutive game Saturday to extend its longest win streak as an NCAA Division I program. More than just winning, the 'Runners have been rolling to victory, posting an average margin of 18 points in their current winning streak.
STREAKING ROADRUNNERS: The 'Runners will look to make it four consecutive wins Saturday night against Utah Valley University. It would be their first four?game win streak since winning four in a row from Feb. 8?17, 2007.
DEMARCUS DOUBLES UP AGAIN: Senior forward Demarcus Hall (Richmond/College of the Sequoias) has made the most of his increased playing time over the past few weeks. Tuesday at Sacramento State, Hall posted his second double?double in the past three games with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Over that stretch, Hall is averaging 17.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game.
INDEPENDENT MINDED: Several Roadrunners find themselves ranked among the NCAA Division I Independent leaders in this week's statistical rankings. Freshman guard Alex Johnson is the highest?ranked 'Runner, leading all independent players in three?point shooting at 46.8 percent. Senior guard Zack Grasmick (Strathmore/Granite Hills HS) checks in at No. 3 on the list at 42.7 percent.
Johnson also ranks No. 3 among the assist leaders (3.6 apg) while fellow freshman Donavan Bragg (Inglewood/Serra HS) is sixth at 3.0 apg.
Other 'Runners among the independent top 10 are freshman center Cory Brown (Lakeside/El Capitan HS), who is No. 5 in blocks (1.2 bpg) and junior guard Terrence Johns (Chicago/Bakersfield College), who is No. 7 in scoring (14.6 ppg).
HE'S NUMBER TWO WHEN IT COMES TO THREES: Senior guard Zack Grasmick (Strathmore/Granite Hills HS) has firmly established himself as the No. 2 three?point shooter in CSUB history. He enters Saturday's game against Utah Valley with 146 treys in his career, 13 better than former teammate Dwuan Rice.
In case you're wondering, Kenny Warren owns the CSUB career record at 278.
...AND THE LITTLE ONES SHALL LEAD THEM: With an eye towards the future, the Roadrunners continue to play a rotation that leans heavily on their younger players. Freshmen and sophomores account for 44 of CSUB's 90 total starts this season and have played 1,860 of a possible 3,625 minutes this season (51.3 percent).
'RUNNERS VS. DI COMPETITION: Although 2007?08 is the first time the Roadrunners take on a full NCAA Division I schedule, it does not mark the first Bakersfield foray into NCAA Division I play. The 'Runners own an all?time mark of 23?56 in 79 games against 38 different Division I opponents. Note that this mark does not include games against current DI teams that were not DI when they met.
ANOTHER STARTER OUT WITH AN INJURY: Freshman forward Cory Brown became the latest addition to the CSUB casualty list when he missed Tuesday's game at Sacramento State with an ankle injury (he is expected to play Saturday vs. UVU). With Brown's injury, CSUB starters now have missed a total 13 games due to injury this season.
36 YEARS OF CSUB BASKETBALL: The 2007?2008 season marks the 37th anniversary of Roadrunner men's basketball at CSUB. Since the program's inception in 1971?72, the Roadrunners have posted an impressive all?time record of 736?318 (.698).
WHERE OTHERS HAVE GONE BEFORE: Making the leap from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I play is a big step. It's also a step taken by several Roadrunner rivals over the past few seasons. Bakersfield is the sixth West Region school to make the jump since 1990. The others are: Cal Poly, Cal State Northridge, Sacramento State, UC Davis and UC Riverside.
In fact, DII and the California Collegiate Athletic Association have been jumping off points for many of the current DI programs in the West. All nine Big West Conference members are former DII schools and all but UC Irvine were formerly in the CCAA. Other former DII and CCAA schools from the West include Fresno State, Pepperdine, San Diego State and San Jose State.
