SANTA CRUZ, Calif. ? Cal State Bakersfield junior Yulia Blinovskaya
became the second Roadrunners this season ? and ever ? to score 100
goals in a season as she led Bakersfield to a 13-6 win over Cal State
San Bernardino to place fifth at the Western Water Polo Association
Championships at the East Fieldhouse Aquatics Center on the campus of
UC Santa Cruz on Sunday morning.
Bakersfield finished the season ranked No. 20 in the final NCAA Division I rankings.
Blinovskaya needed two goals in the final match of the season to reach 100 goals for the year, something that only teammate Amanda Ortiz had ever done in Bakersfield water polo history. Ortiz scored four goals on Sunday to set the Roadrunner school record with 123 goals in a single season.
Blinovskaya needed less than 10 minutes to get those two goals, and they both came on penalty shots. Her second goal ? and 100th of the season ? gave Bakersfield a 4-2 lead and started a 6-0 run by the Roadrunners that made the score 9-2 and put it out of reach for the Coyotes.
Paola Medina led all scorers with five goals, while Ortiz scored four and Blinovskaya scored three. Bori Toth also scored one in the win.
The Roadrunners finished the season not only with school records in individual scoring, but also in team goals scored as well. Bakersfield scored 432 goals in 2007, which is more than 100 goals better than the previous school record of 328 goals scored in a season in 2005.
Bakersfield also broke school records for most wins in a season with 25, which was five wins better than the previous school record of 20 set last season, as well as winning percentage at .676 after a 25-12 overall record, which is much better than the previous record of .627 (17-10) set in 2002.
