No. 20 Polo Splits On Day One Of WWPAs

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. ? No. 20 Cal State Bakersfield won one and lost one on the first day of the Western Water Polo Association Championships on Friday held at the East Fieldhouse Aquatics Center on the campus of UC Santa Cruz.

The Roadrunners won game one 16-6 over Chapman before losing in the quarterfinals to UC San Diego, 12-9.

The Roadrunners jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter and controlled the contest throughout against Chapman. Amanda Ortiz, ranked second in the nation in goals entering the week, added to her total with a game-high six to give her 112 goals on the season. Teammate Paola Medina added four goals in the winning effort.

In the second game, UC San Diego's Natalie Hockett scored six goals, including four in the second quarter, to lead the 15th-ranked and fourth-seed Tritons to the 12-9 win over 20th-ranked and fifth-seeded Cal State Bakersfield in the first quarterfinal of the 2007 Western Water Polo Association Championship.

UCSD improved to 18-13 on the season and with the win and advances to the semifinals at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The Tritons will play the winner of UC Davis-Colorado State.

The Tritons took a 5-2 lead after the first and took a 9-4 lead at the half thanks to four goals in the frame from Hockett. No other players from UCSD had more than one goal. Yulia Blinovskaya, Kelly Bowling and Paola Medina had two goals each.

Cal State Bakersfield will play the loser of UC Davis-Colorado State at 12:30 p.m. Saturday for the right to play in the fifth-place game on Sunday.
