ARCATA, Calif. – Entering Saturday afternoon's twinbill at Humboldt State, the Cal State Bakersfield softball team had never seen a perfect game from the short end of the scoreboard. But 1,289 Roadrunner softball games later, Humboldt State's Lizzy Prescott finally turned the trick to lead the Lumberjacks to a doubleheader split with Bakersfield at the HSU Softball Field in Arcata.
Prescott's gem earned Humboldt a 5–0 victory in the opener. Roadrunner freshman Katie Chavez responded with a gutsy performance for a 4–2, eight–inning Roadrunner victory in the nightcap.
Prescott fanned four while allowing just six balls to leave the infield in game one. Chrissy Motzny provided all the support she would need by driving in three runs in a four–run third inning.
The Roadrunner offense came to life in the nightcap, however, while Chavez gave a Houdini–like performance in the circle, stranding 14 Lumberjacks on base to keep her team in the game.
Junior catcher Hilary Taylor staked the 'Runners to a 1–0 lead with her first career home run to lead off the second inning. Humboldt got the run back in the bottom of the second, but senior leftfielder Carrie Hilvers restored the 'Runner lead with an RBI double in the third inning.
After a Cara Klein single put runners on first and third, Humboldt Coach Frank Cheek replaced starter Tracy Motzny with Prescott. Prescott continued her perfection from game one into the fifth inning before Kianna Urbanski finally solved her with a single to right field.
The score remained 2–1 into the seventh inning when Humboldt seemed poised to complete the sweep. Natalie Galletly led off the bottom of the seventh with her 10th home run of the season to tie the score at 2–2. A pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out, but Chavez coaxed a ground ball and a pop fly to extricate herself from the jam.
That set the stage for freshman Kelli Bailey to play the role of hero for the 'Runners once again. Seven days earlier, Bailey hit a walkoff home run in a win over Cal State Monterey Bay. This time, she connected for a two-run blast in the eighth inning to make winners Chavez and Bakersfield.
Bakersfield (27–20–1, 19–13 CCAA) concludes a six–game road trip with a doubleheader at UC San Diego Tuesday. Humboldt State improved to 43–6 and 21–3 with the sweep.
