ARCATA, CALIF. – Friday the 13th proved to be the most unlucky of days for the Cal State Bakersfield softball team as No. 3 ranked Humboldt State completed a 10-0 and 2-0 sweep at the HSU Softball Field in Arcata.
Humboldt State pounded out 14 hits in the opener, putting the game away early with a six-run second inning. The Lumberjacks added four more in the fourth inning to support the three-hit pitching of Lizzy Prescott, who improved to 24-2 on the season.
Megan Sutherland's suicide squeeze bunt in the first inning proved to be the difference in the nightcap, although the Roadrunners had chances. Their best opportunity came in the fourth inning when Kianna Urbanski and Carrie Hilvers led off with back-to-back singles.
Kelli Bailey moved the runners along with a ground ball, but Hilary Taylor lined out to third base and Cara Klein grounded out to short to end the threat.
Junior rightfielder Pikake Nutter-Gaudet was the only Roadrunner to hit safely in both games, going 1-for-2 in the opener and 1-for-3 in game two. Urbanski went 2-for-3 in the second game as the only other 'Runner to collect more than one hit.
Bakersfield (26-20-1, 18-12 CCAA) and Humboldt (42-5, 20-2) will conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday in Arcata. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
