LA JOLLA, CALIF. – The Cal State Bakersfield hitters and pitchers couldn't get in sync, falling 4-0 and 6-5 in a doubleheader at UC San Diego Monday evening.
CSUB, playing as the home team due to a scheduling accommodation in game originally scheduled to be played in Bakersfield, drops to 11-10 overall and 8-6 in the CCAA. UCSD improves to 14-12 and 9-3 with the sweep.
The Roadrunners couldn't get a timely hit in the opener, stranding seven base runners, including four in scoring position. UCSD, meanwhile, managed to drive home all four Tritons who reached scoring position to support the six-hit pitching of starter Melissa Ward.
CSUB's bats came alive in the nightcap, pounding out 11 hits and five runs, but the Tritons rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out the victory.
Freshman designated player Kelli Bailey (Rodeo/John Swett HS), who earned a spot in the starting lineup last weekend, continued her hot hitting by going 2-for-3 in both games. She hit her first double of the season and drove in two runs to lead the Roadrunner offense in game two.
With the 'Runners two outs away from earning the split, however, the UCSD offense came to life. Jenny Habib's RBI double gave the Tritons a 6-4 lead. They tacked on another run on an fielder's choice before Bailey's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh got Bakersfield back to within one run.
CSUB continues in 34-day road trip Saturday afternoon with a doubleheader at Cal State San Bernardino.
