DAVIS, Calif. - Competing against two of the top team in the nation, Cal State Bakersfield dropped a pair of close games on Saturday to open play at the Davis Shootout, losing 8-6 to No. 20 Cal State Northridge and 9-4 to No. 9 UC Davis.
The Roadrunners never led against Northridge, but never trailed by more than two goals in the match either. With 1:29 remaining, Lorene Vidal scored to pull the Roadrunners to within 7-6 of the Matadors, but Northridge scored in the final minute to put it away.
Amanda Ortiz and Katherine Gillett each scored twice for Bakersfield, while Vidal and Yulia Blinovskaya each scored once in the loss.
Against Davis, Bakersfield had one of its worst first halves of the season. The Aggies scored six unanswered goals in the first half to put Davis up 6-0 and Bakersfield pulled a narrow 4-3 advantage in the second half, but it was too little too late.
Blinovskaya led Bakersfield with two goals, while Ortiz and Becky Seelos each scored once for the Roadrunners.
Bakersfield continues at the Davis Invitational on Sunday.
