BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Cal State Bakersfield sophomore Amanda Ortiz had an impressive afternoon with nine goals in two games to lead the Roadrunners to a sweep of No. 19 Cal State Northridge and Pomona-Pitzer at the John S. Hillman Aquatics Center on Sunday.
The win over Cal State Northridge marked the third straight victory over the Southern California powerhouse dating back to last season. The Roadrunners defeated Northridge 13-11 — the same score as on Sunday — in the third match of the 2006 season and followed with a 5-4 overtime win later in the year.
Bakersfield had lost six in a row to the Matadors heading into last season.
In the first game of the day, Ortiz was unstoppable with eight goals scored against Cal State Northridge. Her first two goals of the game came 21 seconds apart in the first period and turned a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead.
Ortiz followed with three goals in the second period, one more in the third and finished with two goals in the fourth period. Her goal with 5:48 remaining in the game gave Bakersfield a 12-9 lead, which ended up being the game-winner.
Also against Cal State Northridge, Yulia Blinovskaya had four goals and newcomer Paola Medina had one.
In the second game, Cal State Northridge rebounded to defeat Pomona-Pitzer, 14-7, before the Roadrunners faced their second opponent.
Bakersfield used a smothering defense to limit Pomona-Pitzer to just one first-half goal, but struggled to get its offense going and led just 4-1 after two quarters. But the Roadrunners extended the lead to 7-1 less than three minutes into the third period and held that lead until the end.
Blinovskaya led Bakersfield with three goals against Pomona-Pitzer while Neshmil Ariy and Katherine Gillett each had two. Ortiz scored her ninth goal of the day against Pitzer, while Bori Toth and Becky Seelos also scored for the Roadrunners.
Bakersfield will take part in the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego next weekend.
