RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A big second period ended up being the difference as No. 15 nationally-ranked Hartwick edged Cal State Bakersfield in the Roadrunners' season-opener, 14-10, at the Lancer Invitational at Lancer Aquatic Center.
The Roadrunners trailed the nationally-ranked squad by a narrow 4-3 disadvantage after one period, but the Hawks score five of their seven second-period goals in the first three minutes of the second quarter to blow open the game.
The big second period gave Hartwick an 11-6 lead midway through the match and that ended up being too much for the Roadrunners to overcome.
Bakersfield actually outscored the Hawks 4-3 in the second half, but the four-goal advantage in the second period made up the overall difference in the match.
The Roadrunners had pulled to within four at 11-7 on Yulia Blinovskaya's goal just more than a minute into the third quarter, but Hartwick kept Bakersifeld off the scoreboard for the next eight minutes to hold onto the victory.
Amanda Ortiz led the Roadrunners with three goals, while Neshmil Ariy and Blinovskaya each scored two goals apiece. Katherine Gillett, Brittany Berry and Paolo Medina also scored for Bakersfield in the season opener.
The Roadrunners open the home portion of their schedule on Sunday when they host Cal State Northridge and Pomona-Pitzer at the Hillman Aquatics Center.
