BAKERSFIELD, Calif. ? The CSUB women's basketball team returned to form with a solid all?around performance in an 89?66 win over visiting San Jose State Thursday night at the Icardo Center in Bakersfield.
Junior guard Kelley Tarver (Valencia HS) led the CSUB (4?4 overall) offense with a game?high 22 points. Junior point guard Krista Arase (Alhambra/Keppel HS), one of the nation's top NCAA Division I passers, lent a hand with 15 points and nine assists. Senior forward Naomi Johnson (Oxnard College) added her second?consecutive double?double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Natalie White led SJSU (1?7) with 13 points and seven boards. Sayja Sumler chipped in 12 points for the Spartans.
The Roadrunners took the lead for good barely one minute into the first half, but San Jose hung tough for the first 20 minutes. Bakersfield got the lead to nine points five times in the first half but settled on a 42?36 advantage at intermission.
The second half proved to be an entirely different story.
Bakersfield scored the first 13 points of the second half as part of a 30?4 run to open the period. The lead grew to as many as 34 points before finishing at the 23?point final.
Just one game after shooting 39 percent from the floor, Bakersfield responded with its best shooting night of the season, hitting on 52 percent of its attempts (35-of-67) including 6-of-12 from beyond the arc. The 'Runners combined their hot shooting with good ball security, turning the ball over a season?low 12 times.
The 'Runner defense, meanwhile, forced the Spartans into 25 turnovers. Six of those miscues came during Bakersfield's big run to open the second half.
