'Runner Women Fall to Arkansas-Little Rock

LOS ANGELES, Calif. ? With the effects of last night's draining double overtime loss to Loyola Marymount still looming, the CSUB women's basketball team couldn't sustain a second-half run by the University of Arkansas-Little Rock in a 69-54 loss at the 2007 LMU/Hilton LAX Holiday Tournament.

The Roadrunners (6-8 overall) got 16 points from junior point guard Krista Arase while junior guard Kelley Tarver chipped in 15 points and a team-high four assists. All-tournament selection Christine Kepenekian followed her career-high performance of 36 points Friday night with a 12-point, seven-rebound effort Saturday.

A pair of free throws by Tarver at the 15:15 mark gave the Roadrunners their first lead of the game, 8-7. Kepenekian followed with a long three -to increase the early lead. CSUB held a 20-11 advantage with just under eight minutes remaining, but the Trojans slowly chipped away at the lead. A pair of Jessica Brown free throws at the 1:50 mark tied the game 26-26, where the score would sit heading into halftime.

UALR (9-4 overall) opened the second half on a 7-2 run before the ?Runners cut the deficit to 33-30 on two free throws by Tarver. But the Trojans then exploded for eight straight points to open up a 41-30 lead.

A three point bucket by Arase broke the scoreless streak for CSUB, but the Trojans answered right back with a jumper by Kim Sitzmann.

Arase followed with a layup and Nikki Leon buried a baseline three-pointer to help cut the spread to seven. CSUB would close the gap to eight on two occasions, but down 58-46 with 1:50 remaining and forced to foul, the Trojans hit 7-of-8 from the charity stripe to put the contest out of reach for the ?Runners.

The Trojans' Sitzmann led all scores with 22 points, including four triples. Chastity Reed came off the bench to score 14 points while Andrea Keys and Anshel Cooper chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively.

The ?Runners committed 19 turnovers in the game, though mostly unforced as UALR was credited with just six steals. CSUB also shot just 36 percent from the field to the Trojans' 50 percent.

CSUB continues its seven-game road trip Jan. 4, traveling to take on Santa Clara University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
