BAKERSFIELD, StateCalif. ? The CSUB men's basketball team saw life from the other side Thursday night, going from the hunter to the hunted as NCAA Division II member San Francisco State upset the Roadrunners 76-73 in the exhibition opener for both teams at Rabobank Arena.
Bakersfield is playing its first full season of NCAA Division I competition in 2007-08. The winningest team in Division II history before leaving for Division I this season, CSUB often found itself playing David to bigger schools' Goliath. This time, however, it was the Gators who fired the fatal stone.
Senior guard David Van Someren did the honors, picking up an errant pass and cutting across the top of the key before draining an off-balance three-pointer with 1.7 seconds remaining to break a 73-73. The Roadrunners had a chance to tie at the buzzer, but Zack Grasmick's long three-point attempt didn't come close.
Van Someren finished with a team-high 19 points. Robert Hayes added 14 while Chris Rodriguez chipped in 10 with a game-high seven rebounds.
Santwon Latunde scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to help CSUB come from behind several times. But the ?Runners never managed more than a two-point lead at any point, although they stayed close enough to forge 12 ties.
After CSUB took its final lead at 47-46 with 12:04 remaining, the Gators embarked on a quick 12-2 run to take their biggest lead at 58-49. But the ?Runners responded by chipping away until they had a chance to take the lead from the line trailing 67-66 with 3:08 to play.
Latunde made one of two free throws to tie the game. On CSUB's next possession, freshman Donavan Bragg missed a pair from the line. Instead of being up three, the game remained tied and that proved to be the pivotal sequence.
Rodriguez made two free throws and a short jumper and CSUB answered with a Latunde layup. With a chance to tie the game again, Bragg made just one of two free throws and SFSU led 71-70.
Van Someren gave the Gators temporary control with a nice driving left-handed layup from the right side to make it a three-point game in the final minute. But Latunde found three-point specialist Zack Grasmick alone on the wing and Grasmick nailed the three ball to force the frenetic final seconds.
CSUB defended well with the shot clock off. Alex Thomas killed most of the clock near the center circle before driving the left side of the lane. The ?Runners cut Thomas off and, out of control, he threw a wild pass to the top of the key that found nobody. But Van Someren hustled to the loose ball and drove left around an incidental screen before fading to his left and hitting the game-winner.
CSUB will close its exhibition season Saturday when it hosts NCAA Division II No. 10 ranked Alaska Anchorage. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
