FARMVILLE, Va. ? Manny Guzman and Oscar Coppieters tallied goals while Steve Trojanowski had another huge game in goal as CSUB's men's soccer team claimed a much-needed 2-1 win over Longwood University Saturday.
“This was the best we've played in quite a long while,” said Bakersfield Head Coach Simon Tobin. “It was a good victory against a good team and it gave us a positive ending to this trip.”
Guzman, a junior midfielder, recorded his first goal of the season in the 14th minute of play. Manny Garcia sent a cross into the box where Guzman redirected the ball into the net.
Less than two minutes later, the Lancers (3-5-2 overall) countered as Marcus Dixon sent home a shot after receiving a cross from Chenor Diallo.
Knotted 1-1 in the second half, the Roadrunners put forth one of their best 45-minutes of soccer this season, beginning with the play of Trojanowski in goal.
At the 59:19 mark of the game, a foul in the box by a Roadrunner defender resulted in a Longwood penalty kick. The shot by Martin Vickerton, which would have given the Lancers the lead, was saved by Trojanowski.
“Steve made a great save and that really gave us the momentum for the remainder of the match,” said Tobin.
In the 86th minute, Coppierters gave the ?Runners their first game-winning goal in seven outings. A free kick taken by Javier Barba bounced into the Longwood goalbox where Coppieters was able to drill it into the net from six yards out.
Bakersfield had 13 shots in the match, eight on goal, while the Lancers took 20 shots, eight of where were saved by Trojanowski.
After nearly a month of road games, Bakersfield, now 3-8-3 on the season, returns to its home turf Friday for a 7 p.m. match against Houston Baptist.
