ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Sonoma State scored just 46 seconds into the match and made it stand up as the Seawolves completed a sweep over Cal?State Bakersfield on Friday at Seawolf Field by identical 1-0 scores.
In what will likely be Bakersfield's final match against Sonoma State for some time with the Roadrunners' move to NCAA Division I, the Seawolves made a quick goal hold up for the game winner. Andrew Bailey's header from Brett Cook on a free kick was the lone goal of the game and handed Bakersfield its first loss of the season.
As might be expected in the Bakersfield-Sonoma rivalry, this match was a chippy one with a combined 49 fouls called and eight yellow cards shown. The Seawolves had 32 of those 49 fouls, but the Roadrunners had five yellow cards, including two within the first 20 minutes of the match.
Sonoma State outshot Bakersfield by a narrow 10-8 margin, but just like the women's game earlier in the day, the Roadrunners could only manage one shot on goal. Manny Garcia had that one shot on goal, while Lyle Martin and Ryan Gay each had two shots on the day.
Bakersfield goalkeeper Steve Trojanowski made seven saves and allowed just one goal while Sonoma State goalkeeper Clark Rupp needed to make just the one save for the clean sheet.
The Roadrunners stay on the road this weekend on Sunday when they travel further north to Arcata, Calif., to take on Humboldt State in the second half of a CCAA women's-men's doubleheader. The men will kick off at 3 p.m.
