SEASIDE, Calif. – Cal State Bakersfield continued its hot stretch in the middle of the 2006 season with a 3-0 men's soccer win over Cal State Monterey Bay in Seaside on Friday afternoon.
The win was Bakersfield's fourth in a row and the Roadrunners (8-3-1, 4-3-1 CCAA) are 4-0-1 in their last five matches. During the four-match win streak, Bakersfield has outscored its opponents 11-3. The Roadrunners also improve to 3-0-0 all-time against the Otters (0-9-1, 0-8-1 CCAA) and have outscored Monterey Bay 12-1 in those three meetings.
Guilherme Mitrovitch gave the Roadrunners all the scoring they would need in the 16th minute when he scored his first career goal. The left-side defender notched an unassisted goal on a free kick to score the eventual game-winner and put Bakersfield up 1-0 early in the match.
Senior Lyle Martin remained hot by adding a second goal in the match to mark his ninth goal in the last eight matches. His goal came on a penalty kick and gave the Roadrunners a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute.
Bakersfield went a man down in the 70th minute when freshman Javier Barba was sent off, but the Roadrunners not only didn't allow a goal, they scored a third.
This one came from freshman Rigoberto Pinera on a long shot that went over the head of Monterey Bay goalkeeper Matthew Lege. The goal was the first in Pinera's young career and was assisted by Manny Guzman to complete the scoring.
Bakersfield goalkeeper Steve Trojanowski made seven saves to earn his fourth clean sheet of the season and his second in the last three matches.
The Roadrunners stay on the road one more match and will take on San Francisco State on Sunday at 3 p.m. before heading home for three matches next week at the Main Soccer Field.
