Last-Minute Substitute Esparza Scores to Keep Roadrunners Perfect in 2006

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Cal State Bakersfield Head Coach Simon Tobin looked like a genius when he subbed in Mike Esparza with less than two minutes remaining in the game when the Roadrunner freshman scored a 90th minute goal to improve Bakersfield's record to 3-0-0 with a 1-0 win over Concordia-Irvine at the Main Soccer Field on Wednesday.

Esparza wasted no time giving Bakersfield a much deserved win in a match that the Roadrunners completely dominated from beginning to end. Bakersfield outshot Concordia by a gaudy 25-2 margin and the Eagles rarely ventured into Bakersfield's defensive third.

The goal was one of beauty and wasn't dissimilar to chances that the Roadrunners had throughout the match. In the attacking third, as it was the entire match, sophomore Towa Manda slipped a pass behind the defense which found the Bakersfield freshman waiting alone with Concordia goalkeeper Mike Borst.

While Borst had a brilliant match — singlehandedly keeping the Eagles in the match with eight saves, many of them of the spectacular sort — Borst wouldn't be able to deny Esparza who slipped the ball inside the far post for the gamewinner with just 57 seconds remaining.

Bakersfield had chance after chance throughout the match, but no one was less lucky on Wednesday than senior Lyle Martin. Martin took six shots with Borst making one brilliant save and three other shots finding the woodwork leaving the match scoreless. Bakersfield also had a shot cleared off the line by a defender.

The Eagles had just one shot on goal, but it was certainly a dangerous one. On a free kick from 22 yards out, Jeff Clark sent a rocket on frame, but Bakersfield goalkeeper Steve Trojanowski was up to the task with the save. It was the only save Trojanowski needed to make for the clean sheet, his second of the early season.

The 3-0-0 start is the first such perfect start through three matches since the 2003 season.

Bakersfield is now off until Friday, Sept. 8 when it will hit the road to open CCAA?play to take on Sonoma State at 4 p.m.
