• The Cal State Bakersfield women’s soccer team has hit its stride in the 2025 season, picking back up with momentum gained at the end of the previous campaign. 
• Bakersfield’s 2024 squad made a deep run into the postseason, reaching the Big West Championship match before ultimately falling in penalty kicks.  
• Under the guidance of first-year Head Coach Whitney Pitalo, the 2025 Roadrunner roster features 32 women: 18 returners and 14 newcomers.  
• So far this season, the `Runners have utilized a well-balanced offense, featuring eight different goalscorers, to create their opportunities: 
  • CSUB’s top offensive weapon this year has been senior Natalie O’Sullivan, a forward who leads Bakersfield with 3 goals and 7 points 
• Senior defender Mya Fortun has proved to be an ironwoman as the only `Runner field player this season to play all 720 minutes. 

CSUB at UC San Diego 

• The `Runners hit the road to open league play against the Tritons:  
  • Thursday, Sept. 18, 7 p.m. (PT)  
  • La Jolla, Calif. 
• The Tritons wrapped up non-conference play with a 2-3-4 record. 
  • UCSD had a tough preseason slate, taking losses against California, Colorado State, and Washington State. 
• CSUB and UCSD will be meeting for the 13th time in the all-time series with the Tritons largely dominating the series, 9-1-2, but CSUB is 1-0-3 against UCSD at the Division I level. 
• Bakersfield’s lone win against the Tritons came last season. 
  • The `Runners routed UCSD 3-0 with a late goal in the first half giving way to two more goals in the second period. 
• The two teams both played their first season The Big West in 2021. The matchup produced ties in 2021, 2022, and 2023 before Bakersfield broke through for a victory.

• Cal State Bakersfield’s men’s soccer team will host its final two matches before starting Big West play, including its annual FREE game 
  • The Roadrunners are partnering with Kern Behavioral Health & Recovery Services for the third annual Kickin’ It With Behavioral Health to make admission free for fans. 
• The Roadrunner men’s soccer team made a run at the Big West regular season title in 2024 and will look to finish the job heading into 2025.  
• Cal State Bakersfield played for the Big West crown in the regular season finale despite being predicted to finish last in the 2024 preseason Coaches Poll.  
• Third-year Head Coach Adam Grant will look to a large crop of experienced `Runners to lead a talented group of newcomers.  
• Bakersfield has played short-handed most of this season, missing 2 or 3 starters per match, including First Team All-Conference defender Luka Geishauser.  
  • Grant and the `Runners will aim to grow and learn from their tough non-conference schedule, then hit the Big West slate full force with a battle-tasted and healthy squad. 

CSUB vs. Santa Clara 

• The `Runners have returned home after playing three-straight road games to host the third-annual Kickin’ It With Behavioral Health:

• CSUB and Santa Clara are meeting for just the second time in the all-time series. 
• The first-ever matchup between the two teams was in 2023, ending in a 1-1 draw. 
  • The Broncos took a 1-0 lead late in halftime, but Bakersfield scored the equalizer in the 67th minute. 

CSUB vs. Gonzaga 

• Bakersfield is scheduled to close out the non-conference slate with the Bulldogs:

• CSUB and Gonzaga have a tightly-contested all-time series that is tied at 3-3-1. 
• The two teams will be meeting for the fourth time in the last five seasons. 
• A year ago, in Spokane, Wash., the two teams played to a 1-1 draw. 
  • A CSUB own goal gave Gonzaga a 1-0 lead in the first half, but Bakersfield tied the score midway through the second period. 
• The `Runners won the previous two meetings against the Zags, so visiting team will be looking for its first victory over CSUB since 2018.

• The Cal State Bakersfield volleyball team continues the 2025 season, heading out for its final tune-up before league play begins. 
• The new-look Roadrunners are building team chemistry from the ground up as the CSUB roster features only one returner who was on the squad last Fall. 
• CSUB Volleyball is in a new era with the departure of its previous Head Coach, Giovana Melo. 
  • The `Runners will be led by co-interim Head Coaches, Felipe Nogueira and Cinthia Angus, both of whom have previous head coaching experience. 
• CSUB’s fresh-faced roster welcomes back one returner, Druegan Davis, as well as 14 newcomers. Highlights of a few first-time `Runners: 
  • Nicole Zake (So.): Transferred to CSUB in December from Virginia Tech 
  • Suelen Lima (So.): Spent freshman season at William Carey University, helping the Crusaders go 29-11 and reach the NAIA National Tournament 
  • Luiza Da Cruz (Jr.): Led Miami Dade College to NJCAA Runner-Up finishes in 2023 and 2024, falling to her now-teammate Nele Broszat’s team in the National Championship a year ago. 
• Bakersfield has now won three of its last four matchups, including a 2-0 performance at the Nevada Invitational last weekend. 

CSUB at Central Cal Challenge 

• The `Runners are ready to tackle the Central Cal Challenge, an annual tournament shared between the four teams, with Bakersfield’s turn to host tentatively slated for next season:

• Tournament host Sacramento State comes into the weekend with a 4-5 record following a 2-1 showing at the Boston College Tournament. 
  • The Hornets lead the `Runners 22-6 in the all-time series and CSUB will be looking for its first win against Sac State since 2009. 
• Fresno State has a 3-5 record so far this season following a 1-1 performance at its own tournament last weekend. 
  • The Bulldogs own a 23-7 record all-time against the `Runners, but Bakersfield earned a 3-2 victory against Fresno State last year on the Bulldogs’ home court. 
• Pacific heads north with a 4-4 record on the year after going 0-2 at the same tournament CSUB played in last weekend, although the two teams did not meet then and there. 
  • Bakersfield is 1-8 all-time against the Tigers and the `Runners will aim for their first victory in the series since 2008.

• The Cal State Bakersfield cross country season will take their first 6k test of the season along the Central Coast. 
• Standout `Runner Rain Gomez leads the team in her final season. She holds the CSUB 4k record and is #8 all-time in the 6k. 
• Freshman Ava Leisenfelder was Bakersfield's leader in the season-opening meet, posting a the #3 mark in the 4k race in program history. 
• Crystal Torrecillas ranks #5 all-time for CSUB in the 4k and has produced consistent training.   
• Crystal Raya and Valerie Garcia are a solid pair of `Runners who round out the squad. 

CSUB at Gaucho Twilight 

• The `Runners will continue the season at UC Santa Barbara's meet with an evening run along the coast.

• A pair of Big West foes in Cal Poly and meet host UCSB will also compete in the evening race.

• The Roadrunner women’s golf team sets out this weekend for its second tournament of the season. 
• Third-year Head Coach Katy Barrett Baxter welcomes back a strong group of veterans from her 2024-25 squad: 
  • Seniors Iris Han and Sarah Mutai return as Bakersfield’s Top 2 scorers from a year ago and are on pace to wrap up their careers on two of the best in program history. 
  • Sophomores Emilee Canepa, Anna Kehrer, and Kate Montemayor gained ample experience during the rookie campaigns while Ashlee Kresha is ready to go following a redshirt season.  
• The `Runners welcome two newcomers in freshman Fiona Clancy and Rena Kaneko. 
• On the heels of a record-setting 2024-25 season, the Roadrunners rolled that momentum into a great Opening Weekend a little over a week ago. 

CSUB at Kalispel Invitational 

• The `Runners will continue the season at Eastern Washington’s tournament: 
  • Sept. 22-23 
  • Spokane, Wash. / Kalispel Country Club 
• With the 2025 edition of EWU’s tourney, CSUB will now have competed in the event in three of the last four seasons. 
• CSUB Head Coach Katy Barrett Baxter sends a good mixture of youth and experience to the tournament: senior Sarah Mutai, senior Iris Han, freshman Rena Kaneko, freshman Fiona Clancy, and sophomore Anna Kehrer. 
• A year ago at EWU’s tournament, the `Runners reset their 36-hole tournament score with Han leading the way and Mutai and Kehrer also contributing to the record-breaking performance. 
• The field consists of CSUB and 13 other squads. 
• The tournament will consist of 54 holes over two days of action, 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday.
