Heading into Friday's season-opening swim meet against NCAA Division I preseason No. 2 Stanford, the Cal State Bakersfield men's swim team knew that it would be a difficult test.
After the meet was over, that's exactly what it was. Stanford showed why it is the 25-time defending Pac-10 champions with an easy 127-62 win over Bakersfield at the Avery Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon.
Stanford took at least the top three spots in each of the first eight events. But the result is what could only be expected against a loaded Cardinal team that returned numerous NCAA Division I All-Americans from last year's third-place national team.
Evan Crocker was awarded maximum points in the ninth event of the afternoon when he won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 246.75.
The 400 individual medley was Bakersfield's top team-scoring event with the Roadrunners earning 16 team points. Alexey Belyy led the way finishing in 4:11.99, with Sampo Sissala in at 4:19.35. Brian Berry finishing in 4;27.59 and Brian Lencioni touching in 4:40.48.
In the final event of the day — the 200 freestyle relay — the Bakersfield team of Justin Burdine-Ortega, Piotr Gegotek, Avery Wickham and Filip Zemier earned 11 team points in a time of 1:28.29.
The Roadrunners continue their tough opening-season road trip at NCAA Division I and Pac-10 powerhouse Cal Saturday morning at 8 a.m.
