RENO, Nev. Cal State Bakersfield senior Chris Figures broke one of the longeststanding NCAA Division II records with a toss of 64 10 in the shot put Saturday afternoon at the Bill Cosby Invitational in Reno, Nevada.
Figures, who already held the mark for the longest throw in the NCAA II this season, shattered the previous best record by nearly a foot. Ahmed Shata of Abilene Christian held the old mark, making a throw of 63 101/4 at the 1986 NCAA II National Championships in Los Angeles.
Van Mounts also turned heads for the Roadrunners with an impressive toss of his own. Mounts throw of 63 11/2 was an inch of the school record and the longest of the year in NCAA II until Figures recordbreaker.
Figures continued his winning ways on the day with a personal best toss of 64 11/4 in the 35pound weight throw, winning the event easily.
On the womens side, April Burton won the 20pound weight throw with a mark of 64 1, which was an improvement on her NCAA II best distance this season.
Burton also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 48 31/2 with teammate Cecilia Barnes close behind at 45 1/4.
Wendi Plott established a new personal best time of 2:17.57 in the 800 meter run, taking the event by nearly two seconds for her first indoor event victory on the season.
The Cal State Bakersfield indoor track and field teams close out the indoor season with the NCAA II National Championships March 1112 in Boston. The outdoor squad will be in action at the Northridge Invitational on March 5.
