Smart Named First Team AVCA All-Region

November 24, 2004

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Senior middle blocker Sabrina Smart (Shafter/Bakersfield College) earned first team All–Pacific Region recognition as named by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).

Smart is now eligible for NCAA Division II All–America honors. Those awards will be given Wednesday, Dec. 1. She will look to become the 15th Roadrunner volleyball player to earn All– America laurels in the last 15 years. To date, 14 ’Runner players have captured 21 All–America awards, including 1994 Player of the Year Christy Wieneke.

In addition to Smart, junior rightside hitter Lindsey Jordan (Santa Barbara/San Marcos HS) was named to honorable mention all–region.

Smart capped a brilliant senior season by hitting .375, a CSUB record that shattered former All–American Rachel Morton’s previous mark by 21 points (.355). She earned first team All–CCAA honors as one of the top hitters and blockers in conference play this season.

A young CSUB squad—of which Smart was the only senior—capped a solid 2004 campaign last week when it advance to the NCAA Pacific Regionals for the 15th time in the last 17 seasons. CSUB finished the year 17–9 and tied for third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
