Early Goals Lead `Runners to Second-Straight Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Cal State Bakersfield men's soccer team defeated San Francisco 2-1 on Sunday at Main Soccer Field in front of a large crowd. The Roadrunners scored twice in the opening half hour and held off the Dons to head into conference play with a two-match win streak.

Key Facts
  • As part of the Fourth Annual Kickin' It with Behavioral Health, an event made possible by the generous support of Kern Behavioral Health & Recovery Services as well as Your Drug Store, over 1,000 fans got to watch the `Runners for free!
  • Jesse Wangusi scored just 16 seconds into the match, shocking Bakersfield's visitors with an early haymaker.
  • Oshea Foster added CSUB's second goal at 27:39 and led the `Runners with five shots, including four on target.
  • Goalkeeper Diego Ramirez made four saves to help preserve the one-goal victory.
  • San Francisco finished with 10 shots, matching CSUB's total, but the Dons scored only once on a penalty kick.
How it Happened

The `Runners needed only 16 seconds to take the lead. Wangusi finished a play assisted by Justin Knighton and Ulisse Alberti, giving CSUB an early advantage. Foster doubled the lead in the 28th minute with a left-footed finish, and CSUB carried a 2-0 lead into the final 10 minutes of the half. San Francisco answered at 34:47 when David Raphael converted a penalty kick.

CSUB maintained its one-goal edge after halftime despite the Dons continuing to press. Ramirez made one second-half save, while San Francisco goalkeeper Lucas Jones stopped two CSUB attempts. Foster nearly added another goal in the 69th minute when his shot struck the left woodwork, but the `Runners ultimately held on for the 2-1 victory.
