Bakersfield Falls to Portland in 4 Sets

CHENEY, Wash. – The Cal State Bakersfield volleyball team won the third set and served up eight aces, but the Portland Pilots prevailed 25-17, 25-19, 19-25, 25-17 Thursday at Reese Court. The Roadrunners dropped the opening match of the Eastern Volleyball Tournament, but will have two more opportunities before returning home.

  • Jordyn Waite-Ward and Suelen Lima led CSUB with 11 kills apiece. Lima added seven digs and two aces.
  • Defne Yanik had five kills without an error on 10 attacks for a .500 hitting percentage. Leylah Duran added six kills on .286 hitting.
  • Analiese Gagliano tied for the match high with 13 digs and served a match-high three aces. Samantha Capinpin had 14 assists while Luiza Da Cruz added 13.
  • The `Runners held an 8-7 edge in aces, but Portland hit .298 in an efficient offense. Maui Robins paced the Pilots with 16 kills on .367 hitting to go with 13 digs.
How it Happened

Portland never trailed in the first set and used a 5-0 run to stretch its lead to 11-4. The `Runners answered with four straight points late, but Portland closed out the frame while hitting .423 in the 25-17 win.

CSUB opened the second set with three straight points and built a 9-4 lead. Portland pulled even at 13, took the lead at 15-14 and later used a 3-0 run to move ahead 21-17 before taking a two-set advantage.

The third game featured six ties and two lead changes. After a 6-all tie, the `Runners scored three straight and later used a 5-0 run to build a 21-14 lead. CSUB hit .276 and held Portland to .208 in the set while Waite-Ward's five kills helped seal the set win.

Portland erased an early 2-1 CSUB lead with three straight points in the fourth and did not trail again. Facing match point at 24-14, the `Runners scored three straight before Portland finished the match with one final kill.
